Catherine's Yearly Festive Service of Carols Spotlights Unsung Heroes

Her Royal Highness has organised her annual festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The 1,600 guests will listen to a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Love and Generosity

The focus of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been supported by the charity, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Attending the service will be people from various age groups.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
